Five reasons Sundowns are South African champions

Mamelodi Sundowns are worthy winners of the Absa Premiership in South Africa after claiming the title with a game to spare on Saturday.

The Brazilians now have an unassailable seven-point lead at the top of the table with one round of matches to play as they grabbed an 11th league title in the club's history.
KweseESPN looks at five factors in their run to the title.

PERCY TAU

Tau has been simply magnificent this season, not just the goals he has scored, but also his assists.
He provided another example of that on Saturday in setting up the equaliser for Khama Billiat in the 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town, and is hands-down the 'assist king' in South African football.

Players in the PSL tend to blow hot and cold, with a lack of consistency a major problem in the domestic game. But Tau has very few bad games and although he can be wasteful in front of goal, he consistently gets himself into good positions to contribute.

WHERE ARE ALL THE CHALLENGERS?

Orlando Pirates were the only serious challengers to Sundowns for the league title this season and even they came quite late to the party.
Nobody was really able to put the Tshwane-based side under pressure at the top of the table and Sundowns could yet win the league by a 10-point margin, a massive gap in a 30-game season.

Kaizer Chiefs spluttered along, Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United have been well below their expected standard, and it was left to so-called smaller clubs like Maritzburg United and Free State Stars to try to push Sundowns.
Those teams have not got the armoury to do it over 30 games and in the end will fall well back on the league table.

PITSO MOSIMANE

The Sundowns coach likes to speak his mind and doesn't always get it right, but is a meticulous planner and excellent coach who knows how to get the best out of his players.

A third league title for him is a personal triumph and he should take the plaudits. Despite this success being somewhat expected with the best squad in the league, you still have to put it all together.

His challenge now is the potential loss of the likes of Tau and Billiat in the next transfer window as they move to Europe, and rebuilding a team to challenge again next season. But he has the experience and know-how for that and, backed by a billionaire owner in Patrice Motsepe, will hope to build a dynasty of success.

STRENGTH IN DEPTH

Sundowns have an excellent first eleven, but also the strength in depth to be able to rotate where necessary and rest players for key periods.
It has kept the squad fresh and Mosimane has managed that process expertly through the season.

But it is only possible when you have players who you can call into the side that will not reduce the quality significantly, and it is an area where Sundowns are streets ahead of many other Absa Premiership teams.

THEIR FANS

There was a time when many Sundowns fans looked to have deserted the team, but their recent success over the past few years has seen the yellow army come flocking back.
And the way they support the team, win or lose, has been brilliant this season, adding that proverbial 12th man and giving the players a lift.

How many times this season were post-match interviews done with the sweet sound of singing, celebrating supporters in the background, a vast improvement on the toxic support offered by some clubs.
Mosimane has commented on it continuously this season, which shows the value with which the support is held by both players and the technical team.
